I have an offer from Yahoo. I am only concerned about the current uncertainty with the Microsoft and the guy trying to be a deal maker. Does all these impact an individual technical contributor (selected for principal engineer position). What would be your insider advise to me? As a company, it has been a dream to work at Yahoo. I just want to know if I still should consider joining Yahoo.

I turned down a great job offer at Yahoo because of the isolation. I don't own a car and wish to bicycle or light-rail to work. Although there's a station not far, the walk to and fro is lonely and dangerous (crossing those huge intersections takes forever and trying to cross before the signal is risky as traffic is very fast). There is no sidewalk on the Yahoo side of the block so you're forced to cross to the other side of the avenue to walk to the station. The area feels like a military base, what with the Lockheed Martin high fences and a checkpoint right there. I didn't see any restaurants, shops or walkable areas anywhere and wondered where people get out to on those stressful days (or lunch for that matter)?

Yahoo would do well moving somewhere more human-scale. Just because we're computer geeks doesn't mean w/don't care or think about quality of life/work.

Every company has good points and bad points. I work for a great company where the good definitely outweighs the bad. It is great to work for a company when you feel that new ideas will be welcomed and appreciated!

[...] Matt McAlister’s post sharing his thoughts on the good and the bad of working at Yahoo prompted Jeremy Zawodny and Richard Crowley to join the conversation. Each posts remarks on control and innovation were particularly insightful.
the first part of #6 grabbed my eye, and then the last part threw it away. i haven't seen real-life social sophistication correlate strongly with working successfully with social aspects of the internet. but then again, i'm biased: i lack social sophistication, i work on social aspects of the internet, i'm a yahoo intern, and i'm a girl.
