[...] Interesting think piece from Matt McAlister on media as a platform. A theme we’ve touched on before. It’s not about stopping bad behavior or even embracing good behavior. It’s about investing in an architecture that promotes growth for an entire ecosystem. If you do it right, you will watch network effects take hold naturally. And then everyone wins.
[...] Gather more and produce less, indeed. It’s hard for lifelong newsroom types to see layoffs one day and reader participation initiatives the next and not feel a bit slighted. But we’re not just talking about event calendars and little league reports here, although I love ‘em, we’re talking about your newspaper as the platform for local information and interaction.
[...] Matt McAlister has a great post up about the idea of media as a platform, which I encourage anyone interested in the future of media online to read. He says that in his view it isn’t really about “openness” or “walled gardens” and other popular metaphors: It’s not about stopping bad behavior or even embracing good behavior. It’s about investing in an architecture that promotes growth for an entire ecosystem. If you do it right, you will watch network effects take hold naturally. And then everyone wins.
But you are still thinking inside the box of ad-supported media -- enabling advertisers to horn in on what people are doing. And ad-supported media is inexorably corrupt and corrupting. Media cannot serve two masters, and it is inevitably the master who pays the piper that calls the tune.

You are right on about relationships, but a mediated relationship is unsatisfactory. The solution is direct relationships -- direct relationships between consumer and producer, as well as direct relationship between consumer and media.

That is what "Advancing Evolution: The dis-intermediation of Media" is all about, and I just came our with version 2:
