Mark Glaser asks his readers this week to submit the answer to the following question:

"What would motivate you to contribute to a citizen media site?"
Lowest price viagra, I can't imagine that anyone is going to be able to answer that question in an interesting way. It's the wrong question. It's kind of like asking why do people sing at church. Or why do people meet their friends at the pub.

Photo: -bartimaeus-

If the church asks you to sing, phiser viagra, you sing. If your friends tell you to meet at the pub, you go to the pub, lowest price viagra. The community and purpose of doing things together is already implied, so you do whatever everyone else in that community does if you want to be a part of it. Can you order viagra without a precition, Jon Udell starts to dig into the critical mass hurdles for social networks in a recent post where he quotes Gary McGraw saying:

"People keep asking me to join the LinkedIn network, but I’m already part of a network. It’s called the Internet."

The real question is not about getting people to do things. There are too many things to do and too many people to socialize with in a day already. Lowest price viagra, The question is about forming meaningful communities and the kinds of things that will help a community flourish. Meaning comes in millions of different shapes and sizes, Nebraska NE Nebr., but there are lots of precedents in terms of ideologies, aesthetics, and methods. Louisiana LA, News, for example, is inherently about being first to report on an event. Successful community-based news sites enable people who care enough about a topic to either be the first to report on it or be clued in before less speedy outlets pick up on something. It feeds into a competitive and sometimes gossipy human nature, Christianity and viagra. Just ask your best reporters why they became reporters, lowest price viagra. Digg appeals to the reporter in all of us.

I used to attend a charity event called Rebuilding Together where groups of people would assemble and fix up houses and schools around the city of San Francisco. There was a core team who selected applications for fix-it team deployments. Viagra craigslist, Then there was a leader who would drive the work to be done by each team at each site. Lowest price viagra, On the chosen date, people would jump on a project and invite their friends to join. It was impressive to see what a focused group could accomplish in a day, fixing plumbing, painting, cleaning, como se ase viagra, rebuilding fences, etc.

Why did people do it. Viagra online kaufen, There was a purpose. We were helping people truly in need. The commitment was lightweight, lowest price viagra. It was 1 day a year. It was well organized. I didn't have to debate with people about how things should be done, mexican viagra. The result was impactful, a total overhaul of a building. Lowest price viagra, It was fun. I had a laugh with my friends and met new people. What is in pink viagra, Often when people start asking how you get to critical mass, they're losing the plot. Sure, it would be great to worry about scaling a site rather than fighting for a Digg. But if you and your community are doing something unique and valuable, viagra online pharmacy, then size really shouldn't matter. And in many cases, it makes sense to make the community exclusive and smaller rather than bigger and diluted, anyhow, lowest price viagra.

The question then becomes, "Are you offering a service that a lot of people find unique and valuable?"

I think a lot of publishers fail to understand the size of a potential market, Cheapviagra, what's unique about an offering, and the value of that offering to the people who do actually care about it.

Then there's also the issue of recognizing what you can actually deliver. You have to play to your strengths.

Yahoo, cheapest viagra tablets. Lowest price viagra, Answers is a good example of that. The idea of getting immediate answers to any question you can think of from real humans is outrageously ambitious. There are lots of ways to get answers to questions out there. But Yahoo. Viagra selling points in pakistan, played to its strengths to get it off the ground, then it just took off. It's easy, lowest price viagra. It's fun. It works. And, viagra prices in pakistan, therefore, it's meaningful. And now there's nothing like it out there anywhere. Lowest price viagra, Of course, not everybody can point a firehose of traffic at a domain, but there are plenty of cases where Yahoo. failed to create a community by pointing a firehose of traffic at it.

So, what makes a meaningful community that has a definitive purpose. Yeah, well, that's an answer you can get from Cameron Marlow, danah boyd, and a lot of people a lot smarter than me.

Though perhaps this is all just echo blogging and the real question gets to something people already understand. Maybe the question is simply: "How do you make membership in your community desirable?"

Wikipedia defines "privilege" as follows:

A privilege—etymologically "private law" or law relating to a specific individual—is an honour, or permissive activity granted by another person or a government. A privilege is not a right and in some cases can be revoked.

I think the answer is in there somewhere for everyone who is struggling to get their community to do stuff.

Acheter viagra, There's something very uncomfortable about seeing your face appear on another web site while you're visiting it. That's exactly why I think MyBlogLog is going to be a really big deal. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens now that it's part of Yahoo!.

The quotable Paul Saffo visited Yahoo. last week and said this about technological breakthroughs: "It takes 20 years to have an overnight success." That's spot on in this case, Importing viagra, too.

First there was email, and then we got instant messaging, acheter viagra. The next online communication breakthrough was the social networking app. Now there's distributed identity, another variation on personal expression and communication.

It's a more explicit expression of implicit behavior, if that makes any sense, where we get viagra in new delhi.

And just like each predecessor in the social software space, resistence to the new paradigm will widen generational gaps for a time until the concept is adopted widely enough. Acheter viagra, Change like this is an ongoing theme in the evolution of the Internet.

I remember a time when it was uncomfortable to discover that marketers had my email address and sent things directly to my inbox. It was uncomfortable to know that friends and colleagues could see when I was online via IM and be able to ping me any time they wanted. Viagra ireland, It was uncomfortable to know that people were looking at, assessing, and deciding whether or not to mark me as a connection on social networking sites.

MyBlogLog now exposes access to another channel that was previously known only to me...my browsing history.

The numbers I've seen internally tell an amazing story, the classic hockey stick, acheter viagra. But an even bigger indicator is the number of requests for connections that I've received since becoming a member. Many are people that have likely seen my face on web pages as I traverse across the Internet, viagra in camp pendleton, not people who found me through a search or via another friend.

MyBlogLog makes the Internet feel like a huge party where you bump into random people that might be interesting and see friends that you didn't know were in the same place as you. It's weird. Acheter viagra, It's awkward. It's fantastic. Safely buy viagra discount, What do these connections mean. I can't say, yet. But intuitively I know that MyBlogLog is going to matter in lots of different contexts. The potential here is just massive, acheter viagra.

Order viagra bars, Somebody recently referred to MySpace as "Outlook for teenagers". Wow, Bradford viagra, what an interesting way to visualize the paradigm shift.

I had trouble grasping why it was that kids were referring to their MySpace experience using phrases that imply addiction, but this expression broke down that mental block for me, hjerne viagra. We can all relate to moments when you're pounding the "Check Mail" button in your email app. Buy viagra into canada, Of course, you can't reduce MySpace to such a simple generalization without missing some other key trends that serve it well.

There's something fascinating about watching people react to what you post online, order viagra bars. I do the same thing after I post something in my blog that I hope people read, free viagra. I start checking technorati and watching my referrer logs more closely. American made viagra, People who add Wikipedia entries closely monitor the evolution of those pages as others contribute to it. People who post questions on Answers keep checking their question to see who has responded. Order viagra bars, I would bet that people are often more interested in who responds than what the reponse is.

Feedback is validation, cheapest viagra tablets, and there's no age group that cares more about validation than teenagers. Viagra in pakistan, It can be a paralyzing experience for the less confident, but the Internet creates a nice layer of distance and control that provides a more comfortable home and even a canvas for anyone who can express himself or herself.

Mike Butcher drew an interesting picture of the portal landscape in his Netimperitive column, como aser mi propio viagra, "Goodbye and good luck". Where 2 get viagra, He asked how Google, Yahoo. and Microsoft were going to address the need for people to control their online identities:

"In this new world where there is no true 'one-stop-shop' for everything; where people subscribe to feeds from a myriad of places; where sites themselves are turning into mashups of other sites and none of us goes to one place any more (OK, so we never did, but this is now a fundamental and unbreakable trend); what do portals DO?.., order viagra bars.

The fight will now become one of identity as portals which used to control your ID because you were literally 'walled in' now try to win you over with identity tools locked into their ecosystem."

MySpace caught the big guys asleep at the wheel, viagra for sale from thailand, though they run the same risk of controlling identity against people's wills. Viagra without prescription uganda, Another reason MySpace works is because no other service before it was enabling teenagers to build a fully customizable identity and to use that identity to interact with other teenagers. There are lots of platforms for socializing online, but none prior to MySpace gave kids the ability to build an evolving reflection of themselves, free trial of viagra. Avatars are neat, Osta alennus viagra, but there's so much more to expressing teenage drama than altering your shirt.

As Jeremy Zawodny Order viagra bars, noted, the theoretical WebOS concept already exists. It's on MySpace where you can install apps from other online services in the form of badges, buttons and visual doodads that spice up your site:

I recently came across something that completely changed the way I think about the idea of a Web OS, cheap viagra no prescription west coast. Over on the Flickr Ideas forum, Viagra doesn't work for me when tired, I came across a posting titled Flickr is NOT MySpace compatible... please make a javascript free "Badge".

Take a minute and think about the language that Daniel used there. It the exact same sort of complaint you might have heard 5 or 10 years ago about a desktop application, order viagra bars. 'Is CoolNewGame compatible with my Mac?'"

I thought the blogging craze would have enabled this world for teenagers, and from what I know about LiveJournal, this is exactly what was happening. But a handful of common user interface elements and an email platform pulled all the right pieces together to create the MySpace explosion in a way that blogging just wasn't serving.

The opportunity to disintermediate MySpace certainly exists if someone can figure out how to couple the independence of a domain owned and controlled by a user along with the communication platform that unifies the way people can give feedback and validation to eachother that's integrated into the experience.

Comments and trackbacks aren't enough, obviously. And too much control will confuse the masses.

It's a fine balance that MySpace nailed, but it's also a precarious position. I imagine we'll see MySpace cementing their market share by locking down their brand value before competitors figure out how to lure away their users with better offerings. They obviously need to initiate that effort with some better PR.
